EXPANDING OUR SERVICES IN BROOKLYN
Since 1976, Bay Ridge Center (BRC) has delivered comprehensive services and innovative programming to adults 60+ in southwest Brooklyn, with an overarching goal of helping older adults age successfully in place. We serve Bay Ridge and the surrounding neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Fort Hamilton, and Dyker Heights. For decades, we have operated out of a church basement, offering hot meals, vital community education and engagement programs, and social services that help older adults meet their basic needs. Our community is rapidly growing, so we are, too.
We currently serve an area that is home to approximately 26,400 adults aged 60+; one of the largest older adult populations in Brooklyn. NYC Aging has projected the need for a 75% increase in capacity by 2030 for older adult center programs and services in our area, which is growing more diverse. According to the 2014-2018 American Community Survey, 26.5% of the population is Asian and 19.5% is Hispanic. Additionally, this area has the largest Arab community on the east coast.
BRC is excited to promote wellbeing for all members of our growing community through innovative, integrative, and accessible activities at our new building. While engaging in our programs, members will benefit from expert knowledge, world-class equipment, tailored fitness coaching, caring social services, and healthy meals with peers. Additionally, through culturally-relevant programming and a welcoming environment, the building will serve as an affirming space for older adults of all backgrounds to connect and develop lifelong friendships.
